Beside me, Jo worked on fishing her strawberry out of her drink, and with the slightest bit of freedom, I let my eyes scan the room. Connor’s suffocating presence was impossible to ignore when we entered. I was certain Jo had felt it, but she nestled against me all the same. I wondered if, when she was so caught up in digging into my past, she noticed hers staring from across the room. The anger burned its way through the dark. Connor sat front and center in the room, eyes darkening across the decorated hall. He was surrounded with men I recognized, boys who I was sure recognized me, and women I knew none of us would ever see again. Between dancing couples, I could make out his suit and tie, the gold watch I’d never be able to afford.

Though, a beast was always a beast— even when dressed like a man.

When the shiver returned, I forced my attention back to Jo. The only thing that really overwrote Connor’s anger was Jo’s practiced grin, her patented guilt. I’d already made her feel like shit once; the last thing I wanted to do was remind her of another mistake. The last thing I wanted to do was hurt her all over again. When a new song shifted the air around us, I swallowed the lump in my throat and jerked up from my seat.

If she stayed here, she’d notice him eventually.

If she stayed here, she’d remember why she hated me.

“Where’re you going?” Her face twisted in confusion. “Got another crime to confess to?”

When my lips tugged into a smile, Jo relaxed again. Until I held out a hand to her, at least. By the time she realized what I was trying to get her to do, her snort filled the room and Jo slammed her back into the chair behind her. If it were up to Jo, she’d sit in her seat all night, stewing in some awful mix of anxiety and darkened memories, but the look in her eye was unmistakable. It was a look, I realized, I hadn’t seen in a decade. My hand slipped inside hers, and it didn’t take more than a gentle tug to lift her from her seat.

She didn’t freeze up again until we’d actually gotten into the centre of the crowd. I’d never seen Jo as rigid as she was when I finally turned to face her, when I took a step closer. Her cheeks tinted before I even touched her, and reluctance tainted her every movement. Jo wouldn’t look me in the eye as she slipped her arms around my neck, as she tried to settle into the moment, and somehow, her annoyance made her even more beautiful.

“You know I hate dancing,” she hissed.

“Not how I remember it.”

Her snort brought her eyes up to mine, and finally, her cheeks darkened entirely. Her eyes narrowed, but somehow, the comment relaxed her deeper into me. My hand rested on her waist, and when she allowed her head to rest lazily on my shoulder, my muscles unknotted.
